Associate Professor
Jan Carlo B. Punongbayan is Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines School of Economics (UPSE). He earned his PhD, MA, and BS in Economics from UPSE, graduating summa cum laude in 2009. His research interests include education economics, macroeconomics, Philippine economic history, development economics, market design, and causal inference. His recent work examines college admissions, inflation, education policy, microfinance, and the political economy of Philippine macroeconomic history.
He is the author of False nostalgia: The Marcos “golden age” myths and how to debunk them (Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2023) and Twin plagues: How Duterte and Covid-19 wrecked the Philippine economy (Penguin Random House Southeast Asia, 2026). He is also a columnist for Rappler, co-founder of Usapang Econ, and co-host of the Usapang Econ Podcast.
